The 2008 Grand Slam of Darts gets under way on Saturday 15 November, running until November 25 at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall, with some of darts’ biggest starts on show for all to see. Last year’s prize fund of £300,000 has been eclipsed for 2008 with a further £56,000 added to the pool, leading to a first prize of £100,000! As was the case in the inaugural tournament last year, players from both the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) and the British Darts Organisation (BDO) are invited to compete over a series of round robin games until the final two players fight it out in a best of 35 sets match to declare the winner. There is an air of prestige attached to the tournament as the invitation is only given to players who have reached finals, semi-finals or are ranked at the top of their country’s rankings.

Last year’s competition was shrouded in controversy after the BDO switched the dates for their Winmau World Masters event so it clashed with the Grand Slam. BDO’s World Champion, Martin Adams, immediately confirmed he would be playing in the Masters as a show of support for the organisers. Adams lost in the quarterfinals, earning £1,250, substantially less than the £4,000 he would have earned for simply turning up at the Grand Slam.

Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor was victorious last year after beating Andy Hamilton 18-11 and he is the clear favourite to retain his title this year. However, he will be pushed all the way by the likes of Raymond van Barnevald, James Wade and Mark Webster.
